So I hate this song. In fact, I hate it with a burning, bloody passion. However, my stepdad adores it and insists on playing it thousands of times every year. So this one’s for you, Dad. Even though I know you’ll hate this version, it’s getting posted because it’s Glee, and everyone really should love Glee.

Wake Up

This is one of those songs that, for me, holds many memories despite being newly introduced into my musical repetoir.

The first time I heard it was, as you might suspect, during the Where the Wild Things Are commercial. It was catchy, cute, child-like and stuck in my head just as it did more or less everyone else’s. After seeing it mentioned on Paste Magazine’s site a couple weeks later, I was assured that it was a good song (I’d still never heard the whole thing). Then, a few days after going to see the movie and being slightly disappointed not to hear it on the film’s actual soundtrack, I walked into art to hear it playing out of the laptop of the teacher, who is very heavy on the Rolling Stones, Guns’n'Roses, and a myriad of other late-80s-to-mid-90s rock, though he’s been known to occasionally crank out some Owl City or Lady Gaga. Turns out he’d been an avid fan since their 1995 release, and that commercial had made him rediscover the bands.

And so the song became the theme song of our class. I’m almost certain that for a while there he kept it on loop for a while there; it definitely seemed like it was always playing at moments when the 23-student composite class crammed into a tiny corner room would finally quiet down. The first time I heard the song in its entirety, when most the class had gone down to the kiln and I remained upstairs with a couple of other Art III students, I was a bit turned of by Win’s seemingly random bursts of yelling and his harsh voice. In time, I learned to love the song as a whole.

The first song is being performed in a freight elevator, and as for Wake Up itself…Well, I think you’ll be able to figure that out. Feel free to fast forward, but I highly encourage you to watch the whole thing.

Blindsided

So there comes a time probably in most people’s lives where you think something-in this case a relationship- is going if not great then well enough, only to have everything fall apart.

I’ve no idea if this was the case for Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (read bon ee-VAIR, as in the French ‘bon hiver’ for good winter) and his once beloved ‘Emma’, or if this song refers to another aspect of their once-relationship that lead to, for me, one of the best albums of all time: For Emma, Forever Ago. After the couple’s break-up, Justin retreated to his Wisconsin farm home, locked himself away in a cabin for the winter, and came out with this beautiful record (drums and other synthesized instruments were added later.)

Sitting here tonight, blindsided, I think that maybe for the first time I can feel even a fraction of what Justin felt while writing this song. It certainly perfectly compacts how I feel.

Oh dear, it’s dead/exam week.
We’re all sick of it, we’re all ready to be done, and though they were operating under different circumstances, it sure sounds like Vampire Weekend is right there with us. Who DOES give a fuck about an Oxford comma, anyway?

I know, I know.
You’ve had your one day back at school to socialize, and that was all fine and dandy as you missed your friends, but now your teachers are just busy flipping out about exams as there are only two weeks left this semester and God damn you want that break.
Me too.
But for now, just wake up. There’s only two more weeks, we can do this.
Hospice by the Antlers is a very interesting album. As the name may suggest, it’s about a terminally ill patient and her abusive caregiver/lover. Certainly an interesting concept, and they execute it in a way that gives you chills, though many people would shy away from the subject, and keeps you interested.

One of two songs that got me hooked on Death Cab for Cutie, the other being Soul Meets Body. This version doesn’t capture quite as much of the energy of the song as the remastered album does, so if you even think you may like it, it’s a nice one to (again) search on GrooveShark, or iTunes. The Road to Austin

I cannot find this song ANYWHERE.

I swear to you I did not make it up. If you’ve seen Whip It, the fantastic movie I’ve been advocating all through this month, you’d recognize it immediatly. Though it’s not a well known fact, The Section Quartet (known for their absolutely FANTASTIC covers of The Postal Service, Coldplay, Radiohead, Incubus, Dashboard Confessional, and a great deal of other wonderful bands, as well as the entire reason I picked up electric cello, composed the main track for the movie, and oh it’s wonderful. I very highly encourage you to go buy it. Be warned, it is instrumental and only 1:55 or so long, but…It’s brilliant.
